Heater's fixed... for what it's worth. :P The first time we needed to get it fixed the repairman warned me that the ducting in the attic was perishing; apparently whichever past owner of this house got the heating installed went for the cheap, non-UV-stable ducting. This would be fine if it weren't for the fact there are two skylights in the roof, also cheaply installed, that let a lot of sunlight into the roof space. Repair dude told me that the ducting really needed to be replaced (hello $$$), but we could probably make temporary repairs with black garden plastic and duct tape.
Today I climbed up into the attic to have a look.
...Yeah. That's not really patchable. The plastic outer shell of the ducting breaks at a touch and shreds into flakes, the insulation underneath is split in a bunch of places, and the inner mesh duct leaks like, well, mesh. There are half a dozen places where somebody's already patched it with tape and plastic, and off in the furthest recesses of the attic there's a twelve-foot length that's essentially disintegrated. Well, I guess we know now why the main bedroom is cold even when the heater's going!
On the plus side, spring is springing and we won't need the heater much longer, so we can put off getting stuff replaced for several months, by which time we'll hopefully be in a better place financially.
And in other news, WTF stomach? I thought we were done with that!
